Victory Garden program is established.

1942

Sponsored by the Advertising Club of Boston and the Boston Globe, the gardens are located on 49 sites around the city. Their purpose is to help ease the local food shortages resulting from World War II. The Boston Parks Department plows the sites and the Boston School Department offers free horticultural instruction to residents. Some 2,600 families participate. Only the Fenway Victory Garden continues today.
